The Making of a Bracelet

Creating metal and stone jewelry art can be more complex than you might think.   It’s one thing to design a piece, and another to successfully produce the image you had in mind. From design to final product, all is somewhat unpredictable, and therein lies the fun of creating!

Join me as we look at the step-by-step creation of a “simple” sterling link bracelet.

Step 1
Step 1
: Wrap sterling wire around a mandrel for consistent shape of links.

Step 2
Step 2: Using a jeweler’s saw, cut links from coil of sterling wire.

Step 3
Step 3: Solder circular links to create rings.

Step 4
Step 4: Shape circular links into ovals, and texturize the metal.

Step 5
Step 5: Create a bezel and base for a small charm with rose quartz stone to enhance link bracelet.

Step 6
Step 6: Link ovals with sterling double tube, finish charm, and create hook for bracelet.

Step 7
Step 7: Solder charm to bracelet.

Step 8
Step 8: Polish the metal and “set” the stone into the bezel.

Voila!
Voila! Finished sterling link bracelet with rose quartz charm: 6-8 hours in studio, not including design time.

What is Keum-Boo?

Keum-boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver. Traditionally, it is accomplished by first depleting the surface of sterling silver to bring up a thin layer of fine silver. Then 24 carat gold foil is applied with heat and pressure - mechanical gilding - to produce a permanent diffusion bond. Examples of Keum-boo have been found dating back to 500 BCE.
